'Burning memories' was inspired by the artist, Lucas Simoes. Since he isn't a photographer, but an artist he didn't take the photos himself, he found the images online and printed them to experiment with. The meaning behind this series is that if you physically burn photos, eventually you will be able to forget about them as time passes. Keeping this in mind, I decided to use old photographs that I had instead of taking new portraits; by using old images of people from my past, it makes this work more personal for me as they are the memories that I want to erase.
I think my response was fairly successful, I made it personal to me and I felt that I was able to control the fire and what I wanted to burn quite well. Lucas Simoes' work has more colour in his burns, this may be due to him taking the picture whilst they were still burning which gave it the impression that it was still on fire whereas my experimentation has burn marks where it was evident that the fire spread, but no sign of fire in the images. If I were to try this shot again I would try to imitate the fire by asking somebody to hold the photos while it was still burning which would give me the opportunity to take a picture. Furthermore, instead of scanning the burnt photos using a printer, I decided to take a picture instead, this gave it a kind of washed-away look, almost nostalgic, I think this suited the theme very well since it is all about memories.
